Attendees in 2012 Patient Navigation Training at Smith CenterSmith Center for Healing and the Arts is pleased to announce the addition of a new session on young adult cancer issues to September's Patient Navigation Training. The module will be led by Sage Bolte, MSW, LCSW, OSW-C and oncology counselor at Life with Cancer at Inova Health System, and Anne Willis, the Director of Survivorship at George Washington Hospital. It will help prepare trainees to deal with the unique issues that patients in their 20s to early 40s face when living with cancer.

The young adult module rounds out an expansive curriculum that has been part of Smith Center's training for the past 4 years. Building upon a traditional model of patient navigation which is aimed at supporting a patient to ensure timely completion of treatment, Smith Center navigators offer assistance to support the holistic health of a cancer patient. They address the whole patient experience — from nutrition and exercise to stress reduction and spiritual and emotional support.

Other course topics from the training include Client Assessment, Stress Reduction Techniques, Survivorship Issues, Nutrition, Yoga, Application of Complementary Modalities, Expressive Techniques, Cultural Differences, Difficult Conversations, Client Resources, Planning Your Integrative Practice, Communication Skills, and more.

The training is led by Carole O'Toole, MS, Smith Center's Director of Integrative Patient Navigation and Laura Pole, RN, MSN, OCNS, Training Facilitator, who is an Oncology Clinical Nurse Specialist and head chef for Smith Center retreats. Among other notable faculty are Kavita Avula, PsyD, Licensed Clinical Psychologist, Ted Billings, MSW, Psychotherapist, Hunter Groninger, MD, Staff Clinician, Pain and Palliative Care Service, National Institute of Health, Kymberly Sevilla, AHFP, E-RYT, Yoga and Exercise Specialist, Art Therapist Karen Baer, MA, ATR-BC.
