Training Leadership & Faculty

Our faculty is comprised of internationally recognized integrative practitioners, cancer coaches, cancer survivors, distinguished physicians, clinical health professionals, and national leaders in cancer care. The training is co-led by:

Carole O'Toole

Carole O'Toole, MS, is director of Smith Center for Healing and the Arts Institute for Integrative Oncology Navigation in Washington, DC, where she developed their groundbreaking integrative navigation model and cocreated the training in integrative cancer care navigation. She has been an integrative navigator for more than 20 years, directed the establishment of hospital and community-based integrative navigation programs, is the author of two books on integrative cancer care, and chaired Washington DC’s Cancer Consortium Workgroup on Patient Navigation Training and Education. Carole brings passion, humor, expertise, and her personal experience as a survivor of advanced cancer to her teaching.

Laura Pole

Laura Pole, RN, MSN, OCNS, is an oncology clinical nurse specialist, oncology nurse navigator, health-supportive chef, NIA body-mind fitness instructor, and professional musician, with more than 30 years of experience in oncology clinical care and innovative professional education. Laura provides trainings and “informances” across the country in palliative care, advance care planning, culinary translation in cancer care, and the human art of healing. She is director of nourishment education programs and a co-leader of integrative navigation training at Smith Center for Healing and the Arts in Washington, DC. 

Together, they bring more than 40 years of experience in navigation, integrative cancer care, clinical training, and teaching expertise to the training.

The program offers a student/faculty ratio of 2:1 to allow for individualized attention and to facilitate close interaction with fellow participants, which enhances the learning experience and fosters additional support for the individual navigator.

The training also provides extensive educational literature and resources on integrative therapies as well as patient forms and resources needed to establish an integrative navigation practice.
